Dr Campbell is a qualified Consultant Clinical Psychologist, chartered by the British Psychological Society, Registered with the Health Professions Council, and is an Associate Fellow of The British Psychological Society with extensive experience in Adult Mental Health. He is currently employed by the NHS as the Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist for the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Services (IAPT) across both the North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Merseycare NHS Foundation Trust. These IAPT services currently employ approximately 300 clinical staff for whom Dr Campbell has clinical governance responsibility.
He is currently the Clinical Lead for Adult Primary Care Mental Health Services for the Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire Strategic Clinical Network under the auspices of NHS England where he advises and provides leadership on the expansion of the IAPT programme across Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire.
Dr Campbell was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during "The Troubles". In his early career he worked as a researcher carrying out research into the psychological trauma caused by The Troubles and worked as a therapist running therapy groups on the “Peace lines” between the two communities there.
He moved to England in 2003 to train as a Clinical Psychologist and since qualifying has been working for North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust where he is the Clinical Lead for Primary Care Psychological Therapies Services. He has recently also become the clinical lead for the Talk Liverpool IAPT service provided by Merseycare NHS Foundation Trust as a result of a partnership between the two trusts.
He has worked as a Clinical Lead for Liaison Mental Health for the Cheshire & Merseyside Strategic Clinical Network. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Adult IAPT for the Greater Manchester & Eastern Cheshire Strategic Clinical Network. He also runs a limited company providing consultation on service delivery and achieving recovery rates for IAPT services.
He was involved in the development of the Manchester Resilience Hub as part of the group that developed the NHS Mental Health response following the Manchester Arena bombing. This response model has since been used after various major incidents across the UK (including the Grenfell Tower fire and the London Bridge attacks) and has become the accepted NHS response to large scale traumatic events.
